Porthleven Buildings
Porthleven's most recognisable building is the Bickford-Smith Institute
which is next to the pier and harbour entrance. With a tower of about 70 foot in height, it has the appearance of a church but currently is used as a snooker
club and houses the town council offices. It featured (along with various other scenes from the village) as the incident room in an episode of the TV detective
series Wycliffe.
The granite pier is 465 foot long, providing an ideal spot for fishing and
has withstood many rough seas over the years. On the opposite side of the harbour stands the oldest known building in the village, the Ship Inn, which is built
like a sentinel on a ridge of rock overlooking the outer harbour. Over 240 years old and there long before the harbour, it was believed to be a notorious
meeting place for smugglers. |
