Porthleven Old

Porthleven's name is thought to originate from the old Cornish porth (meaning harbour) and leven (meaning level or smooth), as the harbour was once a flat marshland with a little river from the mines flowing into the sea at a small cove. This name dates back to 1714 when Port Leven Cove was first sighted on documents concerning the purchase of Methleigh Manor by Samuel Coode. Prior to this, during the late 16th century, the cove was marked on the map of Kirrier Hundred (now Kerrier district) as Port Leuan, dividing the two parishes of Breage and Sithney.
